Ten of My Favorite Things about Soldier Hollow Golf Course

Ten of My Favorite Things about Soldier Hollow Golf Course

The first 10 years

by Chris Newson, PGA:

  1. The views of the Heber Valley and Mt. Timpanogos are incredible.  Sunrises at the golf course are sublime.  My favorite spot is 4 Tee on the Gold Course.  You get a great view of Timp, and then turn around and see the entire Heber Valley below you.  It’s stunning.

  2. The Clubhouse at Soldier Hollow is so unique.  It’s huge!  Floor to ceiling windows and a wraparound deck.  It’s memorable in and of itself.  Sets the tone for your experience at Soldier Hollow.  Not a bad office.
  3. The Greens.  The majority of them are large, but they all have subtle breaks.  They’re so tricky to read.  If you are having a good day reading, the greens are so pure that you’ll have a chance to make everything.  Then there are times where you just scratch your head all day.

  4. Two distinct golf courses, five sets of tees.  Pick your challenge.  What kind of day do you want to have?  Want six chances at a hole in one, with six opportunities to bomb your driver? Go Silver.  Want to play a USGA Championship venue? Go Gold from the tips. (Have fun with that one!)

  5. Fresh cut french fries from the Soldier Hollow Grill.  Hand made every day.  They are the perfect complement to any of the delicious items on the menu.

  6. Five Utah State Amateur Championships in ten years.  What a privilege it has been to host this event.  We’ve watched it grow in participation and excitement over the last 10 years.  We’ve had front row seats to some of the greatest golf that Utah has to offer.  Tony Finau and Daniel Summerhayes in 2006.  Watching Mike McRae shoot 62 on the Silver.  10 man playoffs in the dark.  So much fun.  The Utah Golf Association has been great partners over the years.  Look forward to many more.

  7. Junior golf tournaments have been great here.  Multiple High School State Championships, UJGA Events, Utah Section PGA Junior Events and too many Region meets to count.  This has provided so many junior golfers with the chance to test their game and try their best.  I can only imagine the memories created for those kids here.

  8. 2012 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.  Such an incredible achievement.  Four years of prep work for one week of Championship Golf.  So many people contributed and came together for a common goal. Still gives me goose bumps to think about it.

  9. There have been and are so many employees and volunteers that have worked here.  They have all contributed in some way to the climate that is Soldier Hollow.  Grounds Crew, Grill Staff, Marshals and Pro Shop staff have all left their mark here.  Our current staff has ten years of history to continue to build on.

  10. We wouldn’t have made it for 10 years without customers.  We appreciate every single one of them for choosing to play our course.  There is such a unique group of people here every day.  Players that have never been here before right next to hard-core enthusiasts who play four times a week here.
